We have officially entered the lull in the NFL offseason. Not much will happen for the Dallas Cowboys over the next month as they lead up to their return to Oxnard for training camp at the end of July.
That will be the first chance the fans get to see the 2021 Cowboys in action and take a look at the newly constructed roster. Most eyes will be on the return of Dak Prescott and his recovery from injury.
Also, how will new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s defense look in his first year with the team? There are many questions and few answers, but a few players looked primed to breakout in 2021.
Without further ado, here are the three top breakout candidates for the Cowboys.
1. CeeDee Lamb, WR
This one should not be a surprise to most people as the now second-year wide receiver was fantastic in his rookie campaign. Recording 74 receptions for 935 yards and five touchdowns in 2020.
He did all of that while working with four quarterbacks throughout the duration of the season. CeeDee Lamb showed why he was selected with the 17th overall pick in last year’s draft his ball skills and playmaking were on full display.
Had Dak Prescott not gotten hurt, Lamb would already have his first 1000 yard season under his belt. We have already seen big plays being made by Lamb in OTAs that concluded a few weeks ago.
The Cowboys arguably have the best receiving core in the NFL and their use of 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, three wide receivers) allows the big three of Cooper, Lamb, and Gallup to all be successful.
According to PlayerProfiler, Dallas used 11 personnel on 78% of their snaps last season, and Lamb was in the slot 84.7% of the time. That percentage for Lamb ranked second in the NFL in 2020.
Lamb has the ability to feast in the slot. Most of the time he will be facing smaller corners that he can exploit with his size and route running.
His breakout season seems inevitable. If he can stay healthy for the duration of 2021 I see an 85+ catch for 1300+ yard season well within reach for the second-year star.
