Patriots QB Cam Newton seems to know exactly what his one-year deal is for.
The Patriots-Cam Newton marriage that evolved as this tumbleweed of an NFL offseason developed was always a match of convenience.
Newton, needing a springboard for his unique talents after injuries and general uneasiness dissolved his relationship with Carolina, found very few takers for his services, despite an overload of workout videos.
Bill Belichick, always willing to lend a hand to former MVPs in need (and available for peanuts), let Newton linger in the breeze for a while, somehow unable to come to a deal with the Chargers, who still prefer Tyrod Taylor (?!). Eventually, Newton (or Belichick) caved, and an incentive-laden one-year deal was born.
But what happens if Newton has an All-Pro year with the Patriots? There is a long-term vacancy under center, after all! Based on his latest Instagram, though, Newton knows exactly where he stands with the organization, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Yup, it’s all right there in the caption — “I ain’t here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.” Wisdom courtesy of the one and only George Strait.
Of course, these are just song lyrics. And perhaps Newton is taking a wider lens on things, and is contemplating his own mortality and the fun he’s got to have while he’s still on this earth.
It seems likely, though, that Newton is acknowledging exactly what he’s been brought into New England to do: learn the system, win, depart for big money.
Newton, by contrast, will lay it all out for you. Read past the fonts, absorb the cryptic comments, and he’s usually telling you exactly what he’s thinking.
Enjoy this brief window, Patriots fans. It probably won’t last for long.
