Chris Herndon may have to wait even longer to make his season debut.

The Jets’ second-year tight end was eligible to return from his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy on Sunday, but a hamstring injury has potentially derailed those plans.

Herndon, whom the Jets drafted in the fourth round (107th overall) in 2018, was working out on his own Friday and running routes when the injury occurred. Jets coach Adam Gase said the situation was “not ideal” and that Herndon is week-to-week.

“It’s severe enough that he won’t be practicing [Wednesday],” Gase said prior to practice. “[We’ll] see if we can get him back toward the end of the week. But it’s a legit hamstring [injury].”

The 6-foot-4 Miami product was a highly anticipated return after a stellar rookie season, in which he recorded 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns.

“I feel bad for him, just because he’s been waiting to get back,” Gase said. “For that to happen — I know the guys were looking forward to getting him back too.”
