Will the Chicago Bears go back to QB Mitchell...

Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of questions from fans on ChicagoBears.com.

David Montgomery really showed a burst on his 80-yard touchdown run against the Texans I didn’t realize he had. What was his 40-yard dash time at the Combine?
Brian T.
Iowa

David Montgomery ran a 4.63 in the 40 at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine. He looked much faster on the 80-yard touchdown run that you referred to, and it more than likely wasn’t an illusion. Running backs coach Charles London told reporters during a video call this week that Montgomery has been working on sprinting the length of the field in practice. Said London: “He works extremely hard. You guys don’t get to see him at practice, but he does that in practice every day as far as finishing runs, whether it’s 50, 60, 70 yards down the field. After he made that run, he came back and said that made a difference, just finishing long runs. He’s been doing it all year and continuing to do it, and he’s been running further and further each day in practice, and he really felt like that made a difference.” So kudos to Montgomery for honing that part of his game and giving himself an opportunity to go the distance like he did against the Texans.

I really enjoyed seeing the Bears get seven sacks against the Texans. What’s the most sacks the Bears have ever had in a game?
Michael W.
Denton, Texas

Since sacks became an official NFL statistic in 1982, the most sacks the Bears have recorded in a game is 12 in a 30-13 win over the Lions in Detroit in the 1984 season finale. Seven different players generated a sack, led by Steve McMichael with 2.5. Dan Hampton, Otis Wilson and Henry Waechter had 2.0 apiece, while Richard Dent had 1.5 and Mike Singletary and Dave Duerson had 1.0 each. The 12 sacks in the game pushed the Bears’ total for the 1984 season to 72, which remains the franchise record.

How close is Cairo Santos to breaking the Bears’ all-time record for most consecutive made field goals?
Alan G.
Northfield, Illinois

Cairo Santos’ streak of 18 straight made field goals heading into Sunday’s game against the Vikings is the longest by a Bears kicker since Robbie Gould set the franchise record that still stands by connecting on 26 consecutive field goals from Dec. 25, 2005 through Nov. 19, 2006. So Santos still has eight to go to tie Gould and nine to eclipse the record. Even if he doesn’t get there, Santos has been among the most pleasant surprises for the Bears this season.
