DeAndre Baker expects to be released by New York...

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman says that discussions about DeAndre Baker’s future with the organization are ongoing, but the second-year cornerback apparently isn’t buying it.

Ralph Vacchiano of SYN reports that Baker and his representatives are bracing for an upcoming release.

It appears that DeAndre Baker’s time with the Giants, and maybe even his NFL career, is about to come to an end.

Baker, who is awaiting trial in Florida on four felony counts of armed robbery, is expecting to be released by the Giants this week, according to someone close to the 22-year-old cornerback.

While meeting with reporters on Wednesday, Gettleman seemed to leave the door open for Baker to remain on the team, but also appeared to imply that the delay on a decision may have more to do with timing.

“We’re still in conversations on that,” Gettleman said when asked about potentially releasing Baker, who the GM said he was “disappointed” in.

Gettleman also acknowledged that optics could factor into the decision and when it’s ultimately made.

“That’s a fair question,” Gettleman said when asked why the Giants don’t adopt a zero tolerance policy in Baker’s case. “All I can say to that: In life, there’s timing that’s involved. In life, there’s timing.”

Currently, Baker is on the commissioner’s exempt list and is facing four charges of armed robbery stemming from an incident in May in Florida. His arraignment was recently rescheduled for January 20.

Baker was a first-round pick of the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft.
