Dexter Lawrence makes CBS Sports’ All Under 25...

One of the few bright spots of Dave Gettleman’s three-year tenure as the general manager of the New York Giants was his selection of Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence with the 17th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

A 6-foot-4, 342-pound monolith of a man, Lawrence has become more than just a space-eater in the middle of the Giants’ defense. He is an all-around playmaker and rapidly becoming one of the league’s best interior defensive linemen.

In a recent ranking of all defensive players under the age of 25, Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports named Lawrence to his second team. Beating out Lawrence for first team honors were Quinnen Williams of the New York Jets and the Tennessee Titans’ Jeffrey Simmons, who like Lawrence, were also were first-round picks.

In his 32 games as a Giant, staring 31, Lawrence has made 91 total tackles (54 solo. 9 for a loss) with 6.5 sacks, three passes defensed, a forced fumble  and 19 quarterback hits.

Lawrence played on 60 percent of the Giants’ defensive snaps in 2020, which is admirable for an interior lineman of his stature. He also was in on 37 percent of the special teams plays — his main job is to put pressure up the middle on field goals and PATs.
