Eagles could select an edge rusher or trade down...

The NFL draft is just days away and as the Philadelphia Eagles look to restock their roster, Jonathan Gannon and his scheme could impact the selection at No. 12 overall.

During a Thursday zoom call with the NFL media, Daniel Jeremiah was asked his opinion about the Eagles’ choice at No. 12 overall. Philadelphia needs cornerback help, but the two top-cover guys excel more in man-to-man concepts than zone, with Patrick Surtain the better of the two in space.

For that reason, Jeremiah believes if Surtain is off the board, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could trade down or add an edge rusher to the roster.

I think Assante Samuel is one of those guys who a lot of teams are high on
and maybe he hasn’t got as much buzz. He doesn’t fit everyone. But again, if
you want to play off and just let him see the field, see through the receiver to
the quarterback and drive and make plays, he’s going coveted.

I think it’s a good point to me, when you look at that defense with the Colts
and you kind of go back through that scheme and trace it back through
Marinelli, that scheme was more front dependent than coverage dependent.

That’s why to me I could see them going with an edge rusher. If the Eagles
were going to move around, which with Howie you always know that’s an
opportunity, even when he’s at 12, I don’t know if he’s going to stay there; he’s
going to go up or down again.

I like Sweat, he’s going to be a good player, but Brandon is getting a little bit
older and so finding another guy there– I think that defense is more front-toback driven than back-to-front driven.

Michigan’s Kwity Paye could be a Brandon Graham 2.o and has rare physical tools that allow him to be “built different.” This season, Paye logged an 87.1 pass-rushing grade per PFF.

Jayson Oweh, Jaelan Phillips are also options if the Eagles trade back.
