ESPN insider gives update on Tyrann Mathieu...

The Chiefs and Tyrann Mathieu have reportedly opened talks for a contract extension, but it’s still uncertain they can get it done.

Will the Chiefs and Tyrann Mathieu stay together past 2021? It all depends on the contract extension talks between the two.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Kansas City has reached out to Mathieu’s representatives already. The defensive back is reportedly a priority for the team and there is “optimism on both sides.”

Apparently, it’s not a “slam dunk,” but it’s something both sides are looking to pursue. Mathieu has previously talked about wanting to remain in Kansas City for the long haul.

The Chiefs are working to bring back Tyrann Mathieu beyond 2021

Mathieu joined the Chiefs in 2019 on a three-year deal. That $42 million has been well spent as the safety helped the team win Super Bowl LIV. He was an All-Pro that season with four interceptions, 12 pass defenses, 75 tackles and two sacks.

Year 2 in Kansas City was even more productive. In 15 starts, Mathieu had six interceptions, nine pass defenses, 62 tackles and three sacks. He picked up a Pro Bowl nod and another All-Pro selection as the Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl.

He is expected to continue playing at a high level in the final year of his contract this coming season. It being a contract year should only make him raise his game.

Since Mathieu just turned 29, he should still have plenty of juice left in the tank. A contract extension should be a no-brainer. The only hiccup could be Mathieu’s value. He’s due for a raise to keep his salary competitive with the top safeties in the league. Broncos safety Justin Simmons just signed a four-year deal at $15.25 million per year. Mathieu’s current contract is worth $14 million per year.
