GM George Paton ‘really excited’ about beginning...

MOBILE, Ala. — As Nathaniel Hackett begins his tenure in Denver, General Manager George Paton has been impressed with the team’s new head coach’s first week on the job.

“It’s been great — everything we kind of thought when we went through the interview process,” Paton told DenverBroncos.com on Thursday in an exclusive interview. “Very energetic. Obviously now he’s grinding trying to get his coaching staff solidified. He’s a tireless worker, a lot of energy. Like we said, he has a lot of juice. It’s been a really fun few days and really excited moving forward.”

Paton and Hackett have not yet taken a deep dive into the team’s roster, but Paton said he feels confident in the early days of their working relationship that their vision for the team is aligned.

“I think we established that through the interview process, basically the three interviews we had together,” Paton said. “I think we’re definitely aligned in the roster and how we’re going to run things throughout the building. He hasn’t had the chance to dive into the roster. Right now, he’s focused on the coaching staff, and when I get back from the Senior Bowl, myself, Nathaniel and his staff will sit down, along with my staff, and do a deep dive into our roster.”

For now, Hackett’s main priority is to build his coaching staff. The Broncos announced three new members of the offensive staff this week, and they’ll continue to build their coaching staff in the coming days.

“I’m really, really excited about the staff he’s putting together,” Paton said. “He talked about that in the interview process, about his staff, what his vision is for the staff — young, diverse, energetic. He’s certainly on the way. It’s hard to get a staff — you don’t know who you can get, but I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as he does on the phone, interviewing the potential candidates. And so I’m really excited for the staff.”

Paton did note that as Hackett assembles a staff, he’ll serve as a resource during the process.

“I am involved with it as a sounding board, and I know different people around the league, as does he,” Paton said. “So, just getting background. But it’s his deal and he has a great vision for his staff.”

Hackett is just a week into the job — but the early signs are promising.
