How the post-Tyreek Hill first round might go

Early Wednesday morning, many of us in this particular industry were trying to get ahead of things with our post-free agency mock drafts. Which, in this particular free agency period, is very much like running through the hail to avoid the hail.

Then, the news came down that Kansas City Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill had asked for, and received, permission to seek a trade in the wake of unsuccessful contract negotiations.

At that moment, we all knew that we were hosed.

So, now that Hill has been traded to the Dolphins for a boatload of draft picks, let’s try to pick up the pieces and see where we are. A few interesting things happen in this particular mock. First of all. you’ll notice that the Pittsburgh Steelers, an organization that almost never trades up in the first round, have done just that to grab their quarterback of the future. (You didn’t think it was going to be Mitch Trubisky, did you)?

Then, following the Davante Adams trade, the Green Bay Packers — who haven’t selected a receiver in the first round since Javon Walker in 2002, are doubling down on just that philosophy. Because when you’re trying to replace the NFL’s best receiver, you’re probably going to have to do it in the aggregate. The Packers have perhaps the NFL’s worst receiver room right now, Aaron Rodgers is in a shorter window, and this is not the time to speculate that this or that decent receiver can get things done.

And finally, after the Hill trade, the Chiefs, armed with two late first-round picks, move up to grab the one receiver in this draft class who might actually be a Hill replacement over time — if the medicals check out.

Oh, and there’s a safety taken first overall, which has never happened in professional football before.

It all sounds nuts, we know. But ask yourself: What in the NFL’s last two weeks has been anything like any previous two weeks in the league’s history?

Folks, it’s time to embrace the anarchy with this mock draft.
