Jets’ Robby Anderson must overcome his Patriots...

Monday night will be the eighth time Robby Anderson will play the Patriots. The first seven matchups have not gone well for him.

Not only are the Jets 0-7 against the Patriots since Anderson joined the team in 2016, he has been held to 15 catches for 169 yards and zero touchdowns in those games.

So is he due for a big game against Bill Belichick’s squad?

“I hope so,” Anderson said. “We’re going to put in that work and let it develop.”

There is some context to Anderson’s struggles against New England. Of the seven games, a backup quarterback has started four of them, including last month’s game in Foxborough when he caught three passes for 11 yards from Luke Falk.

Also, three times in that span the Jets have faced the Patriots in Week 16 or 17, when their season was already lost.

Then, there is the man across from him. Stephon Gilmore usually covers Anderson, and Gilmore has developed into one of the best cornerbacks in football.

“It’s a challenge,” Anderson said. “I have a lot of respect for him. He’s a good corner.”

Jets coaches have worked on making Anderson more than just a deep threat. If he is able to run more routes, it will affect how Gilmore covers him.

“It can create doubt for him in saying he’s running the whole route tree,” coach Adam Gase said. “He’s got to respect that. At the same time, Robby has to understand who he’s going against and he has to use certain techniques to help himself get freed up.”

The Jets are being cautious with TE Chris Herndon as he deals with a hamstring injury. Gase said there is a chance Herndon can practice this week, but they don’t want him to suffer a setback.

“He’s not one of those guys where it’s going to be easy to just work him in a 10-yard to 15-yard range,” Gase said. “He’s one of those guys that stretches the field. When he gets going, he runs fast.

“We just have to make sure we don’t have a huge setback and then all of a sudden we lose him for four weeks.”

The Jets did not practice Wednesday. Playing on Monday night and with all of the injuries they are dealing with, Gase decided to push everything back a day.

QB Sam Darnold won AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 338-yard, two-touchdown day against the Cowboys. … The Panthers signed WR/KR Greg Dortch off the Jets’ practice squad. The Jets signed OLB Frankie Luvu to the practice squad a day after waiving him.
