Notre Dame football fans should just look away...

Notre Dame football quarterbacks have not had a great time in the NFL recently. It’s been almost a decade since an Irish QB got a win as an NFL starter.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish produced one of the great quarterbacks in NFL history in Joe Montana.

Since Montana, however, the well has really dried up for the Irish in the pros.

Mike Triplett of ESPN revealed the truth of that statement during Monday Night Football between the Dolphins and Saints, a game that featured former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book.

Notre Dame football quarterbacks have lost 23-straight NFL starts

A quarterback out of Notre Dame has not won an NFL start since Brady Quinn in Week 13 of the 2012 season. Quinn did it with the Chiefs against the Panthers. He then started the 23-game losing streak by tasting defeat in his next four starts.

Two other quarterbacks have contributed to the streak. Jimmy Clausen was 0-4 in his starts for the Bears and Ravens during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. DeShone Kizer was winless in 15 starts for the Browns in 2017.

Book is the only other Notre Dame quarterback drafted since Quinn, so it’s on him to change the fortunes of Irish alumni in the NFL.

The Saints selected Book with a fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft. He was supposed to sit and develop behind Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian but the former suffered a season-ending knee injury and the latter two ended up on the COVID list. That’s how he ended up starting against the Dolphins.

Whether fans perceived him as a last resort or a potential fairytale story, Book struggled early in his first career start. He threw a pick-six on his second attempt of the game and New Orleans managed just a field goal in the first half.

Before Monday night is over, the Notre Dame winless streak is likely to be at 24.
