Pete Carroll, SC could join up for bowl week

It would be such a crazy, weird — and wonderful — way to close out 2020, and it really could happen: The USC Trojans football team and former head coach Pete Carroll could be in the same metropolitan area while the Men of Troy prepare for a big bowl game.

Let’s unpack this situation, which is as wild as the year 2020 itself:

First, start with Pete Carroll’s place in all of this. The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to visit the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 of the NFL season, with a game set for January 3. You might have noticed that the 49ers have chosen to relocate to Arizona (the Phoenix metropolitan area) due to the restrictions imposed on them by Santa Clara County. The 49ers will play home games in the Arizona Cardinals’ home stadium — in Glendale — on Dec. 7 and 13.

No decision has yet been made on the Seahawks-49ers game for Jan. 3, but if the 49ers can’t come home to Santa Clara for that game, they would presumably stay in Arizona. Carroll and the Seahawks would therefore come to metro Phoenix for that week.

That’s the first half of all this.

Now let’s pivot to the USC half of the equation.

The Trojans’ College Football Playoff hopes are slim to none. Oregon needed to be a powerful team this season, and the Ducks are not. They lost to Oregon State and dragged down the Pac-12’s national profile. Given that the Pac-12 hasn’t played many games this season, it’s nearly impossible to imagine a series of events which could possibly put the Pac-12 in the playoff at this point. The SEC, ACC, and Ohio State — even Cincinnati and BYU — all have much better playoff arguments than USC or Washington, the two Pac-12 teams with three conference wins and no losses. (Colorado is 3-0 with two conference wins and one nonconference win.)

If USC wins the Pac-12, then — in a season when the Rose Bowl is part of the College Football Playoff — the Trojans’ likely New Year’s Six destination is the Fiesta Bowl… in metro Phoenix.

The Fiesta Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 2, one day before Seahawks-49ers on Jan. 3.

Would the two games both be played in State Farm Stadium? Quite possibly. It could also be the case that with the Fiesta Bowl being played one day before Seahawks-49ers, Pete Carroll could face Kyle Shanahan and the Niners at Sun Devil Stadium, the former home of the Cardinals and a place where Carroll has won several times at Arizona State when he coached USC:

The Fiesta Bowl is a prominent championship football game. Seahawks-49ers could once again decide the NFC West champion — for Seattle, not the Niners. San Francisco could be playing for the seventh and final NFC playoff seed in that game.

USC (January 2) and Pete Carroll (January 3) could both be in metro Phoenix during the same game week during the Trojans’ postseason… and the city is not Los Angeles.

What a 2020 way to end this year — and usher in 2021.

It really could happen, too.
