A former University of Tennessee football star and NFL player has been promoted in the local high school coaching ranks.
Former Vol Robert Ayers has been named defensive coordinator at Knoxville Catholic High School.
Ayers, who played at Tennessee as a linebacker and defensive end between 2004-08, joined the Fighting Irish’s coaching staff in 2020. He served as defensive line coach under then-head coach Steve Matthews.
Matthews resigned in March.
Newly-hired Catholic head coach Korey Mobbs named Ayers the Fighting Irish’s defensive coordinator.
Ayers was first-team All-Southeastern Conference as a senior in 2008.
He was selected No. 18 by Denver in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft.
In the NFL, Ayers played for Denver (2009-13), the New York Giants (2014-15) and Tampa Bay (2016-17).
Ayers totaled 257 tackles, 35 sacks, 14 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown during his NFL career.
